Cassange Maraú, Bahia

Intro to Cassange Lake & Beach, Marau

Barra Grande gets all the fame here on the peninsula, but if you really want to explore the uniqueness of the Peninsula de Marau, you need to either stay or spend some time on Cassange Beach and Cassange Lake (Lagoa do Cassange).

Tucked away in the Atlantic Forest on this narrow strip of land are some of the most beautiful properties and hotels on the Marau Peninsula. All the owners here have one vision in common: they have found true paradise on earth, and have kept it that way by building and maintaining their properties with the utmost concern for the environment.

Here, hotels and property owners have the privilege of a stunning beach on one side, with an enormous, picturesque lake in their back yard.

There is little to do here during the day except for laying on near deserted beaches, enjoying the lake with a kayak or paddle-board, or just relaxing in hammock, breathing in the scents of nature mingled with the ocean breeze.

At night there is even less to do, but the light show of stars and sounds of nocturnal life makes one quickly forget about the distractions of civilization. With zero pollution and the nearest city more than a hundred miles away, the sky fills with stars from one horizon to the other… and they seem so close!

Things to do around Cassange:

Cassange / Taipu de Fora Trail

quad-cassange-lake

Cassange is where the ecological trail begins, running between the beach and lakes all the way to Taipu de Fora. It is by far the most picturesque route on the Marau Peninsula. Rent a quad, and spend the whole day stopping along deserted beaches and lakes, absorbing the wildness of Bahia’s most pristine coastline. Keep an eye out for the native fauna, especially the giant bromeliads. They are truly impressive!

Beach walk to Saquaira

If you have a free day and enjoy long walks on the beach, head south from Cassange Beach to Saquaira, the next town over. Stop for lunch and/or beverages at the rustic Bar do Raul. The owner is well-known in the region and does a great job with a wide variety of seafood.

Saleiro and Porto do Jobel

porto-do-jobelIf you walk or drive just across the main road and continue up the road on the other side, you’ll be in the neighborhood of Saleiro. It’s safe and friendly, and truly interesting if you’re into local culture. Just continue along the Saleiro road until it ends at the Port of Jobel (Porto do Jobel) which sits on the Bay of Camamu (Baía de Camamu). This is where most of the tour boats in the area depart from, but even if you’re not catching a boat it’s still worth a visit just for the scenery. On the way back, plan a stop at “Saleiro Point”, an open-air bar/restaurant that serves cold beer, caipirinhas, hamburgers and other snacks. It’s a mostly locals place (which makes it more interesting), but gringos are welcomed and always well treated!
